Calonge, Poble de Llibres is the first established booktown in Catalonia. Calonge features a medieval core full of history, crowned by an imposing castle, and is located in the heart of the Empordà region and the Costa Brava.

The Calonge i Sant Antoni Town Hall launched the project in 2021 to revitalize the local economy and culture, offering incentives to open seven independent bookstores within less than one kilometer.

What makes us unique is turning literature into the driving force of the town. The opening of the bookstores has been accompanied by a cultural program that includes monthly cultural cycles, annual festivals, family workshops, and activities that combine books, wine, gastronomy, and millennia-old history.

Currently, Calonge, Poble de Llibres has six unique bookstores with various themes, all integrated within the town’s historic core. The idea was for the historic core to become like one large bookstore, with each offering publications on different subjects.

There are two general bookstores (Libelista and Rals Llibres) and four specialized ones, including: comics (Calonge Còmics), history (La Històrica), crafts and sewing (La Botiga dels Fils), and music (La Fàbrica).

The commercial offering in the core of Calonge is complemented by small local shops and restaurants  where you can taste the best of local wine and gastronomy.

Inland, we find Calonge, a land of wines, with its farmhouses and wineries, its castle, and corners full of history.

Calonge hosts popular festivals and cultural programming cycles throughout the year. However, there are two celebrations centred around literature: Sant Jordi (April 23), patron saint of Catalonia and International Book Day; and the anniversary of Calonge, Poble de Llibres, an event that takes place throughout December.

The Medieval Market reminds us of the town’s medieval past, the Wine Festival celebrates the long winemaking tradition of our region, and in summer, we offer a program of activities for the whole family.

Calonge, one land, two wines. Two ways of living the vineyard and wine: The Vi country wine (vi de Pagès), made in the traditional way, century after century, and the wine with the Denomination of Origin Empordà and Catalonia, a different way of producing, marketing, and living the vineyard.

Pere Caner, Pere Viñals, Jaume Aymar, Helena Jové, and many others are writers from Calonge who have written or are writing about Calonge and the surrounding areas, thus helping to promote literature, customs, and in this way turning Calonge into a high-quality cultural destination.
Josep Pla says: ‘There is a village, rather old and today very well-maintained, which is Calonge. If I had been able to choose a place to live in peace, with four books, I would have chosen this area.

Calonge i Sant Antoni is located in the centre of the Costa Brava. It is about an hour from Barcelona and 35 minutes from Girona. The Girona railway station is 35 minutes away. The motorway (AP7) to Bar­celona and France is less than 30 min­utes away.
