Nestled in beautiful and historic Bruce County, Ontario, Canada, Cargill was a centre of rural pioneering industry in the late 1800s when European pioneers harvested old growth timber, cleared farmland, and established early industries and enterprises. We live beside the Greenock Swamp, the largest forested wetland in Southern Ontario, home to rare orchids, bald eagles, deer and other woodland flora and fauna.

Cargill is the home of the Bruce County Bookstore, one of the anchor enterprises leading the revitalization of this beautiful and historic rural Southwestern Ontario farming community. The Bookstore focuses exclusively on books about Bruce County and by local authors and publishers. Other enterprises in Cargill focused on community economic development include the Mill Pond Gallery, featuring the work of local artists, the Mill Pond Café, The Dam Ice Cream Bar and the Cargill Museum.

Don’t miss the boardwalk trails in the nearby Greenock Swamp, the largest forested wetland in Southern Ontario and home to rare wild orchids, bald eagles, deer and other woodland and wetland flora and fauna.

Every summer we host book launches, author talks, poetry readings and other art and literary workshops and events.

In the late 1800s, Cargill was home to the largest pioneering logging operation in the area. During prohibition in the 1930s, bootleggers used the nearby Greenock Swamp to hide their stills and evade law enforcement.

Our region is known for its traditional rural farming landscape as well as the Greenock Swamp, the largest forested wetland in southern Ontario, home to many species of plants and animals including wild orchids, bald eagles, blue herons and white tailed deer.
