- St Pierre-de-Clages, Switzerland
In the heart of the Swiss Alps, St-Pierre-de-Clages is home to the Swiss Book Village, located in the municipality of Chamoson. The Book Village Association was founded in 1990 in this historic village, which features a 12th-century Romanesque church and houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Currently, St-Pierre-de-Clages is home to seven bookshops that are open all year round, sharing their passion for books and offering a wide selection of works ranging from rare editions to second-hand books, including antique and out-of-print works covering all areas of publishing. One of these bookshops houses a bust of the writer Han Suyin. St-Pierre-de-Clages also has a collection of new books by Corinna Bille and Maurice Chappaz stored in a historic building, the Rectorat, which are available for sale.
Every year, on the last weekend of August, the village organises an event not to be missed: the Book Festival. Itincludes a large book market offering second-hand books as well as new books by authors attending the festival. There are also many activities on offer.
The Association also organises several events, such as Literary Saturdays, Literary Aperitifs, the Troc et Puces, etc. It also participates in book-related events in Switzerland and abroad, as well as projects promoting regional treasures.
St-Pierre-de-Clages offers much more than books. One monument in particular occupies a very important place in the village. Built at the beginning of the 12th century, the church of St-Pierre-de-Clages is certainly the finest example of Romanesque architecture preserved in the canton of Valais. Every year, it attracts visitors from far and wide. The region is also known for its wines and the lovely walks it offers through its vineyards.
The village of St-Pierre-de-Clages, located in Central Valais, halfway between Sion and Martigny, is easily accessible. It is served by train and there is a highway exit nearby. The railway station is a 5-minute walk from the village centre.
